The contrarian word on the weekend action….

MANSON is a nice each-way price at 16s for the Coral Challenge at Sandown (12.55) tomorrow afternoon....

First-time blinkers appeared to help him on his seasonal reappearance over course and distance last month and they’re on again tomorrow....

He was right out the back in the early and didn’t get the easiest passage when he was making his move mid-race. Still, he managed to make up loads of ground in the later stages of the race....

It all happened a bit too late for him, the winner already had the run on him. but he was only beaten by a length and a quarter by the winner at the end and was going as strong as anything in the closing stages and giving the impression he would have eaten into the lead had he enjoyed a bit more luck in running....

He gets to go off the same mark of 92 tomorrow and that is certainly a workable mark for a horse that has proven competitive off slightly higher marks in the past. If the headgear works for him again, he can go close.

He’s fresher than most of these having raced just once so far this term. He is entitled to come on for the seasonal debut and if he pulls out more he should go very close.

He’s berthed handily enough in stall number 6, last-time-out jockey John Egan retains the ride and the ground won’t inconvenience him. The team get another crack at the Sandown mile and Manson can outrun his price by a fair margin if things fall together.

  • One for the Old Newton Cup....

ATKINSON GRIMSHAW at 14s is the each-way one for me in the Old Newton Cup at 1.45 up at Haydock....

Previously with Andrew Balding, the 4yo is now with Iain Jardine and has had just one run for his new yard – his first appearance since being gelded back in December....

He probably should have won up at Ayr. He got beaten by a progressive 3yo of Richard Fahey’s – conceding weight – and had to come from behind off an unsuitable pedestrian pace to make his play....

He didn’t aid his own chance by being keen early on. But he finished the race off strongly enough and should be better for that first run back....

His mark of 87 looks workable, especially with a 5lb claimer on his back. The ground will suit, an extra 2-furlongs will be to his advantage and his yard is going okay in the main. There’s a lot to like at the price.

The Contrarian Bet Box….

To recap on where my contrarian money will be going tomorrow afternoon….

In the Coral Challenge (12.55 @ Sandown).

  • Nick’s Contrarian Picks – MANSON each-way (16s generally)

In the Old Newton Cup (1.45 @ Haydock).

  • Nick’s Contrarian Picks – ATKINSON GRIMSHAW each-way (14s generally)

That is my take on where the value lies – but you will no doubt have your own ideas and that’s exactly as it should be.

  • The last word….

That’s all from me for today.

Win, lose or draw – enjoy the racing....

I’ll be back a little later today with ATC Extra....

Until then. Stay tuned.
