The pick of the prices in the Vase….

We head up to Newcastle for this weekend’s target race – the Northumberland Vase (3.00) – the consolation race for the Northumberland Plate which takes place a little later in the day….

This is a class 2 event for horses aged 3yo+ over the 2-mile trip. A dozen runners go to post on the tapeta surface….

Flight Officer carries top-weight of 9-10 off his mark of 90. Down at the bottom of the list October Storm is rated almost a stone-inferior and carries 8-11.

  • An obvious favourite….

The field includes just one last-time-out winner in the shape of London Prize – the horse that tops the market this afternoon at 5/2.

The Goodwood race was over 2-miles, he won it by 8-lengths having gone from last to first and he had more in reserve as he passed the post. It was very comfortable.

He’s been put up 7lbs for that. It’s hard to see 90 representing the top end of him and he’s clearly got big claims on tomorrow’s race – but the price is no good for me.

We’ll get to my selections for tomorrow’s race in a moment….

  • My take on the Northumberland Plate….

The Northumberland Plate is the big target tomorrow over on my paid ATC service….

A field of 20 goes to post and I’m taking a two-against-the-field approach – backing both to win and foregoing the palce money….

I’m backing a horse that’s been targeted at this race for a while – and I’m getting a big double-figure price. The other one I’m backing is a bit shorter – but has plenty going for it….

I’m going to nail my colours to the mast of Brian Ellison’s I AM NOT HERE at 14s with bet365 & BetVictor.

He ran down the field at Carlisle in the Cumberland Plate just 48-hours ago. And he probably left a few people disappointed.

He saw plenty of money in the overnight market for that race – he was backed into 6s and 2nd-fav – but could only finish 7th of the 14-runners.

He’d had a pipe-opner over an inadequate mile at Haydock a week earlier. At Carlisle they went over 1m 3f but he still got outpaced. I reckon he’s crying out for this step up to the 2-mile trip.

He’s never gone that far. But I know Ellison has been talking for a while about going hurdling with the horse and I think there’s some confidence about him staying.

If he stays it well, he’ll improve. He goes into the race on a career-high mark of 85 but the trip could be the factor that sends him up the rankings higher still.

Ellison has already improved the horse 20lbs in the ratings since he’s had him and I’m sure he’d love to win a nice pot like this with the horse at a big Northern meeting before switching attentions to the timber.

I’ve got absolutely no concerns about the horse racing so soon after his Carlisle effort. Ellison has won with the horse twice off a quick turnaround. And the horse seems to take his races well, winding up to his best efforts on the back of a series of runs.

The two runs he’s had recently might well have tuned him to concert pitch for tomorrow afternoon’s assignment and the 14s with bet365 & BetVictor is fair enough.

I AM NOT HERE @ 14s (bet365 & BetVictor)

The standard place terms are 1/4 1-2-3. I’ll be playing each-way.

That’s all from me this week. Enjoy your weekend.
