We’re up at Haydock for this weekend’s target race – the poetically titled nationwidevehiclecontracts.Co.Uk Handicap.
A field of 14 runners goes to post on ground that is heavy. And when they say heavy at Haydock, they mean heavy. Expect them to be hock-deep in the stuff….
It’s a class 2 affair over the straight 5f. Such are the underfoot conditions it will feel like quite a bit further. Even over the minimum trip, the ground will blunt speed and an element of stamina will likely come into play….
We’ll get to my selection for tomorrow’s race in a moment….
It’s a huge weekend of racing – with big handicaps in Britain on Saturday and a great Arc card at Chantilly on Sunday….
A massive field of 35 runners goes to post for Saturday’s Cambridgeshireat Newmarket – I’m two-against-the-field with a couple of lively types at prices….
In the 32Red Gold Cup at Haydock, I’m siding with a heavy-ground specialist who’ll be scything them down late on….
In France on Sunday, I’m swerving the Arc but I’m on one each-way at a big price in the G1 Prix De l’Abbaye….

It’s short and sweet for me, this week. I’ve been waiting for Paul Midgely’s TARBOOSH to return to the track – and he shows up here tomorrow.
At 8s with Skybet and 15/2 generally, he’s a little shorter than this column’s usual fare. But I’m not minded to reach for one at a price to take him on with because I expect this horse to go well.
Last time at Ripon he put up an improved effort – one close to a career-best – to win a class 3 handicap. And you can attribute that success – at least in part – to a wind-op ahead of the race.
He was very strong at the line that day and there’s more to come from this one. After the race Midgely said he’d be disappointed if the horse was only as good as the mark of 87 he won off. The handicapper has put him up 4lbs to 91 and I’d be surprised if that new mark puts the lid on him.
Midgely had him in the Portland. He didn’t go for that in the end. Ahead of time his trainer said he would relish the anticipated soft ground. It turned out good ground and maybe that’s why they chose to sit that race out and wait.
He’s never gone on heavy. That’s potential bugbear. But the vibe from the yard appears to be that he it’s more up his street than good and faster ground – ground on which he’s won.
An entry in the Portland tell us Midgely believes his horse stays further than the minimum trip. And that will help him in tomorrow’s conditions. The price is acceptable.
TARBOOSH @ 8s (Skybet) & 15/2 (Generally)
Standard place terms are 1/4 1-2-3. At the price, he’s a win only bet for me. But don’t let me put you off if you fancy playing for the place money. Your call.
That’s all from me this week. Enjoy your weekend.
This evening’s Euromillions ‘Superdraw’ is a jaw-dropping £155 million.
And as if that’s not a big enough incentive to get yourself a ticket – how about TWO entries for less than the price of one...
