The My Pension Expert Handicap Chase at Ascot (1.50) presents itself as a target worth shooting at this weekend….
A field of 12 goes to post over the 2m3f trip and 16 fences on ground that is described as soft this afternoon. There shouldn’t be any rain. But I don’t expect the ground to dry out to any great degree….
It’s a C2 contest for horses aged 4yo+ and rated 0 to 145….
Kerry Lee’s veteran, Grey Gold, heads the weights on his mark of 142. At the other end Rock On Rocky carries 10-5 off his mark of 121….
Six of the field come into the race having won or finished 2nd last time out. The bookies are cautious as you’d expect. Just two horses are generally priced bigger than 12s as I write….
We’ll get to my selection for tomorrow’s race in a moment….
First a word on two more handicaps I’ll be targeting tomorrow on a very good pre-Christmas Ascot card….
In addition to our target races, tomorrow’s card at Ascot boasts two more decent handicaps that I’ve targeted over on my paid service….
In the Racing Welfare Handicap Hurdle, I’m siding with an underestimated horse at a big price.
I really liked the way this horse travelled last time out. He raced within himself and I think there’s more to come off his current mark. He’s available at a big each-way price….
In the Lavazza Silver Cup Handicap Chase, the horse I’m backing isn’t quite such a big price. But he’s double-figures and that’s fair enough.
I’m expecting this horse to improve for a tweak tomorrow. I think his trainer’s decision to make a change will give this horse every chance of producing a personal best. If I’m right, then he’s going to go very close….
You can get immediate access to these extra bets on the website when you take a FREE 14-day test drive of my Against the Crowd service….
Nicky Henderson traditionally does very well at this pre-Christmas meeting and he’s one of the few trainers coming into tomorrow’s race having been firing in winners over the last fortnight….
Henderson can improve on both records tomorrow with POUGNE BOBBI who can be backed this afternoon at prices between 8s and 10s.
The horse is bred for staying trips but when he was tried over 3-miles at Uttoxeter at the back end of last term he didn’t stay.
Last time out on seasonal debut at Ascot he didn’t see out the 2m5f trip either – but I note that he was solid enough in the market that day and probably failed to deliver on expectation.
He steps back again tomorrow to 2m3f and that should prove ideal – based on his winning performance at Ludlow back in February….
Having been as high up in the weights as 142, he’s come down to 136 for tomorrow. That’s another plus. It should prove to be a workable mark now that he’s going to be racing over a more suitable trip.
The soft ground won’t be a concern to him and under a first-time ride from stable jockey Nico De Boinville, he can get back to winning ways.
In tomorrow’s My Pension Expert Handicap Chase (Ascot, 1.50)….
POUGNE BOBBI @ 8s, 9s and 10s (Generally)
Standard place terms amount to ¼ 1-2-3. He’s not an each-way price for me. I’ll be backing him win only. But if you want to play for place money, don’t let me put you off....
That’s all from me this week.
I’ll be back in your inbox in the New Year. Enjoy Christmas.
All the best.
