The pick of the prices in the Sprint Trophy....

The pick of the prices in the Sprint Trophy….

A maximum field of 20-runners goes to post tomorrow at 3.15 for the Sprint Trophy Handicap at York….

Rain is forecast over the track late today and tomorrow too. The official going description is good right now. But there could be some cut in the surface by the time the stalls open on the race….

Kevin Ryan seems serious about winning the race again. He won it last term with Teruntum Star….

That one goes again – this time in first-time visor – off a pound below the mark he won the race from last year. And Ryan is firing three additional bullets….

The interesting one for me is TOMMY TAYLOR who sits towards the bottom of the weights with Jamie Spencer booked for the assignment….

At the start of the season he was rated 107. Now he’s down to 96 – so he’s fallen down the rankings quite a way in a relatively short period of time. And he can take advantage….

Horses fall down the rankings for a reason – because they aren’t performing. And Tommy Taylor is no exception…

But he ran okay over course and distance back in July and then in September – under a first-time ride from Spencer at Ascot – he signaled that he might just be coming back to the boil….

Forget the next-time-out effort at Ayr where the ground was atrocious. Any horse can throw in a clunker on that kind of surface….

Focus instead on the fact that this horse has shown up well at York on several occasions – winning twice albeit in smaller fields – and has produced three of his best five performances at the venue….

He’s weighted to go very close. And if the Ascot performance doesn’t prove to be a false dawn then he is a nice bet at this morning’s general 20s in the ante-post market….

I’m going two against the field. But first a word on the additional bets I’m placing this weekend….

  • Extra bets for the weekend….

It’s the Cesarewitch down at Newmarket tomorrow – with a huge field of 34 horses going to post….

They start in one county and finish in another 2m2f down the track….

I’m two-against-the-field at handy enough prices with. You need a bit of luck in a race of this nature, but I think the pair of horses I’m backing are primed for the job….

You can get immediate access to these extra bets on the website when you take a FREE 14-day test drive of my Against the Crowd service….

Back to tomorrow’s Sprint Trophy Handicap at York….

Michael Wigham has been sparing in his use of GLENAMOY LAD this term. He’s only raced twice during 2018….

The first of those runs came at Goodwood in the Steward’s Cup where he travelled like a quality animal but found nothing but trouble at key points in the race….

Nest time he went to the Curragh for another valuable handicap. He was well-backed but finished down the field after dwelling at the start and enduing another interrupted passage through his race….

Wigham has been a little out of form over the last fortnight but I’m prepared to overlook that. This 4yo is the stable star and Wigham is adept at preparing one at home for a big target….

Connections clearly feel this horse has a big pot in him. He’s dropped a handy couple of pounds to 93. He’s a horse full of potential and if things drop right then he can run a bigger race than odds of 14s suggest….

The Pick of the Prices....

To recap on where my contrarian money will be going tomorrow afternoon….

In the Sprint Trophy Handicap (3.15 @ York).

  • Nick’s Contrarian Picks – TOMMY TAYLOR (20s generally) & GLENAMOY LAD (14s generally)

That is my take on where the value lies – but you will no doubt have your own ideas and that’s exactly as it should be.

That’s all from me this week.

Enjoy your weekend.
