Last week was a decent enough week….

…. with winners at Newmarket and Ascot….

…. and another decent profit logged….

I hope you were able to make something out of the three days….

This Saturday is a Monty Python job – offering something completely different….

…. with a big 2yo race at Newbury….

…. and a switch of codes at Market Rasen….

But we are nothing if not adaptable….

…. and we go where there are good bets to be had….

In the Super Sprint at Newbury (3.30) I’m backing OUR CODY at the general 12s….

…. a horse trained by Richard Hughes – fresh off his first G1 success as a trainer….

…. and a man married into the family Hannon – who know a thing or two about targeting this particular race….

Havana Hurricane is a worthy favourite for Eve Johnson-Houghton….

…. he won the Windsor Castle at Royal Ascot in fine style….

…. and he gets weight off half-a-dozen rivals despite being the top horse in the race on official ratings….

But he’s plenty short enough for my tastes….

…. and the Hughes horse did nothing wrong at Windsor when winning his maiden in June and looking a class above the opposition….

He had them all beaten easily and the only one that got within 6-lengths of him went on and won his own maiden in decent style at Bath yesterday….

Our Cody – a filly who cost just £3k – gets weight off all 19 opponents….

…. Luke Morris gets down to his lowest riding weight over the last 12-months to take the ride….

…. and I reckon he’s a ‘live’ player at a nice price….

In the Summer Handicap Hurdle at Market Rasen (2.40) I’m backing D DAY ARVALENREEVA at the general 10s….

She’s won three on the bounce – all handicaps – since the end of March….

…. rising 27lbs up the scale – and you might take the view that the handicapper has had his say….

…. but I’m not so sure….

She was awarded an opening mark of just 97….

…. based on a couple of goes in novice events on easy ground at Uttoxeter and Wincanton….

…. but quicker ground – which she’s had the last three times – looks to be what’s required….

…. and the way she won last time at Cartmel tells me that she can continue on her steep curve of progression….

She’s certainly well worth a crack at this kind of money on a track where she’s won before….

…. and I expect a big run….

In the Summer Plate at Market Rasen (3.12) I’m backing DOYOUKNOWWHATIMEAN at the general 20s….

He’s Dan Skelton’s second-string runner in the race – but it certainly wouldn’t be the first time the spare horse has landed the money for the yard….

…. and – in any case – 10-2 might not be weight yard principal Harry Skelton wants to make at this time of the year….

I do like the step up in trip on Saturday….

…. given the way the horse was staying on late last time at Uttoxeter after getting a bit outpaced at stages over the minimum trip….

This won’t be the first opportunity the horse has been given at intermediate trips….

…. but it will be the first time he gets such an opportunity on decent summer ground….

…. and I’m mindful that the best three performances of his chase career – based on RPR ratings – are his three most recent….

…. all of them produced on good ground….

He’s up to a career high official rating of 125 on the strength of those performances….

…. but Harry Atkins claims 7lbs….

…. and if the trip on better ground produces the improvement I anticipate then the 8yo is a player at a big price….
