Three picks for Saturday at Newmarket & York….

Get this afternoon’s picks here….

In ATC today….

…. I swing the bat in all the weekend’s biggest betting heats….

I’m on DAWN RISING in the 3.40 at Newmarket – up at 12s….

…. I’m on EYE OF DUBAI at 12s in the 3.15 at York….

…. and I’m on ALBANY at 14s in the 2.05 at York….

That’s the summary….

…. you’ll find all my reasoning below – as per usual….

Oh…. and if you’re looking for the standout place terms on offer – you’ll find them in the Bet Box below….

Read on….

-----

I’m backing DAWN RISING at the general 12s for tomorrow’s Cesarewitch at Newmarket (3.40)….

He was sixth in last season’s edition of the race off a mark of 107 on ground that might have been just a bit softer than ideal….

Tomorrow he gets to run off 97 and he’s surely weighted to go close – with champion jockey Oisin Murphy an eye-catching booking in the saddle for trainer Joseph O’Brien….

He’s run good races the last twice in valuable contests, we know he stays the trip just fine, and I see him running a big one….

Over at York in the Coral Sprint Trophy (3.15) I’m backing EYE OF DUBAI at the general 12s….

He’s in pretty good form at what appears to be his time of the year – going well at Ayr in the Silver Cup before winning at Ripon a fortnight back….

He won the same race at Ripon last year before heading to York and finishing 3/22 in last year’s renewal of tomorrow’s race – when he ran out of the exact same stall he runs from tomorrow….

He’s up 3lb for the Ripon win and he’s 4lb higher in the rankings than he was in last season’s edition of the race….

…. but he did hit the line well at Ripon and I think he can be in the mix off the higher mark tomorrow….

In the Coral 'Pipped At The Post' Handicap at York (2.05) I can’t really argue with the horses at the front end of the market….

…. and if you wanted to back one of those – I wouldn’t be the one to put you off….

If there’s one that could prove to be underestimated then I think that horse is ALBANY at the 14s….

Her profile – one of repeated breaks from the track – suggests there’s a little fragility at work….

…. but I think she’s potentially well-handicapped given her proximity to Beylerbeyi at York in July….

She was beaten just a head that afternoon – giving tomorrow’s Cesarewitch hope tonnes of weight….

…. and Beylerbeyi is 20lbs higher up the rankings now….

Albany was sent off favourite in a small-field handicap contest restricted to fillies next time out at Haydock….

…. and looked like taking a hand in the finish before weakening out of it in disappointing fashion….

Like I say, she’s not overly-raced, and there’s a clear-and-present risk of her simply not turning up….

…. but I do think she’s well-handicapped, the yard is in good form, and the price is sufficient to encourage me to chance her

…. given that the only other options are fronting up the betting….
