The pick of the prices on Day 1 at Goodwood….

In ATC today….

…. I bring you my best picks in the ITV handicaps on Day 1 at Goodwood….

I’m on DIEGO EL QUESO in the 1.50 – up at 8s….

…. and I’m on SEVEN QUESTIONS at 14s in the 4.10….

That’s the summary….

…. you’ll find all my reasoning below – as per usual….

Oh…. and if you’re looking for the standout place terms on offer – you’ll find them in the Bet Box below….

Read on….

-----

…. the Chesterfield – Goodwood – 1.50....

DIEGO EL QUESO is progressive – improving for each of this three runs this term….

…. going close in a big handicap at the Curragh in April, winning a lesser race at Leopardstown later the same month, and then finding just one too good in a valuable handicap at the same venue earlier this month….

He was probably a little unlucky that last day – finding trouble in running when starting to make his run 2f out and then flashing home very late after Colin Keane got him into a daylight….

That race was over the 9f trip and there’s no doubt whatsoever in my mind that had he had tomorrow’s extra furlong to run into he’d have come out the winner….

As it is he’s up 3lb to 100 for the defeat – which is not ideal. But there’s more to come from this 4yo and you’d think he’ll be spot on with that run under his belt….

He’s drawn out in stall 17 – which isn’t the same issue over 10f as it might be over 7f or a mile – and Colin Keane will be able to drop him out, avoid the worst of the scrimmaging, and make his run late down the outside….

…. at least I think that will be the plan….

Ger Lyons trains the horse, it’s his only runner at the track tomorrow, and the 8s is fair enough….

-----

…. the Coral Rewards Shaker – Goodwood – 4.10....

There’s a much bigger field going to post for this – 24 are slated to run – than in previous renewals over the last decade….

Adrestia is interesting at the 9s – she was second in this last year off a 3lb higher mark and Oisin Murphy is back in the saddle for the first time since for the repeat effort….

…. but at the prices preference is for Robert Cowell’s SEVEN QUESTIONS at the 14s….

He was ridden very differently by Jamie Spencer when winning over course and distance in May off 87 – coming late from the rear under hands & heels….

…. and with plenty of pace on tomorrow – all across the track – it could well be a repeat scenario….

He’s quirky, for sure – often wearing the red hood to post….

…. but there’s no doubt the mark of 88 is very dangerous, the trip at the track clearly suits, and the ground will be fine….

You could make a case for plenty….

…. but this one is potentially better handicapped than anything in the race….

…. and if rider and jockey put it together from stall 16 then they will be very much in the mix at a nice price….

Now, just to recap….

The pick of the prices….

To recap on my bets….

In the 1.50 @ Goodwood….

  • Pick of the prices – DIEGO EL QUESO (8s generally)

e/w terms = It’s 5 places generally….

In the 4.10 @ Goodwood….

  • Pick of the prices – SEVEN QUESTIONS (14s generally)

e/w terms = It’s 6 & 5 places generally….

Advised prices are correct at the point of publication – but subject to fluctuation. Shop around – you may find better quotes and terms than advised….

-----

That’s all for today….

I’ll be back tomorrow with picks for Day 2 at the Qatar Goodwood Festival….
