Get my picks for THIS afternoon….
In ATC today….
…. I bring you my best picks in the big handicaps on Day 2 at Goodwood….
I’m on BAY ROYALE in the 1.50 – up at 10s….
…. and I’m on THE LIFFEY at 25s in the 5.40….
That’s the summary….
…. you’ll find all my reasoning below – as per usual….
Oh…. and if you’re looking for the standout place terms on offer – you’ll find them in the Bet Box below….
Read on….
-----
…. the Coral Rewards Shaker – Goodwood – 1.50....
BAY ROYALE hasn’t been seen for 70 days and wears a first-time tongue tie….
…. and the suggestion is that he’s had a niggle….
But he didn’t need a run before winning stylishly at Nottingham on seasonal debut and – at the price – I’m going to take a chance on his race readiness….
That Nottingham race was interesting because he had both Hatteen (2.25l) and Infraad (7.25l) behind him off levels….
…. and they’re both about a third of the price for tomorrow’s race….
Hatteen maybe had an excuse – because he ran keen that day – but Infraad was beaten fair and square….
Of course, both those horses have raced and produced since….
…. Hatteen having stepped up successfully to 12f when winning a valuable St Leger trial at Doncaster last time….
…. whilst Infraad was maybe unlucky in defeat on handicap debut at Chester….
…. and it may prove the case that my pick needs to ease himself back into the game before resuming progress….
But I’m mindful that he’s bred to handle the step up in trip to 12f….
…. and – given that he gets a pound off Infraad and gives just a pound to Hatteen – he should be in the mix if he’s fit enough….
I think the 10s is a decent enough price about him….
-----
…. the HKJC World Pool – Goodwood – 5.40....
Only a single horse in the last decade has managed to win this from a starting stall higher than 10….
…. and with a low-side draw prominent racers have a big edge over the hold-up horses that are likely destined to meet trouble in running at some stage of the race….
From that perspective THE LIFFEY is an interesting proposition at the general 25s….
Once upon a time he was owned by Mrs John Magnier & Michael Tabor & Derrick Smith – and trained by Aiden O’Brien….
From there he went to Joseph O’Brien and you might recall he was the subject of a massive ante-post gamble ahead of last season’s Royal Hunt Cup – backed down from 100s to single-figures at one point….
Needless to say, that gamble didn’t pay off and the 5yo’s star went on the wane….
Sent to Denis Hogan he raced exclusively on the AW – doing nothing before winning three claimers on the bounce and eventually ending up with new trainer Hayley Burton in Newmarket….
He started well for her with a win back in a handicap at Kempton at the start of this month….
…. and there was something to like about his finishing effort – he was always doing enough and I think he won with more in hand than the bare margin suggests….
That was his first run since May, he’s only gone up 4lb, and on a mark of 89 he’s rated well short of his peak….
I just think he’s an interesting runner at a big price on the right part of the track and looking like he’s back on the up-and-up….
It’s a swing of the bat, for sure – but that’s how I like to do it when the case is there to be made….

Now, just to recap….
The pick of the prices….To recap on my bets…. In the 1.50 @ Goodwood….
e/w terms = It’s 3 places generally…. In the 5.40 @ Goodwood….
e/w terms = It’s 5 places generally…. Advised prices are correct at the point of publication – but subject to fluctuation. Shop around – you may find better quotes and terms than advised…. |
