In ATC today….

…. I bring you my best picks in Friday afternoon’s biggest betting heats at Newbury….

I’m on TWIN JETS in the 2.25 - up at 7/2 & 10/3….

…. and I’m on J J MOON at 5s in the 3.35….

That’s the summary….

Only seven go to post for the  “Join Coral Bet £10 Get £50” Handicap Chase at Newbury (2.25)….

…. but TWIN JETS is a fair enough price at the 7/2 & 10/3 to back up his recent Fontwell win from 4lb higher in the handicap….

He only joined Paul Nicholls halfway through last season….

…. he’s improving….

…. and he hit the line strong in Sussex last month….

He’s got form over the fences at Newbury….

…. at this meeting last year, he was beaten 2-lengths in a C3 handicap by Masaccio – giving the winner 5lbs….

That one’s been in the ring with some quality horses on big assignments since then….

…. he won the big novice handicap chase at Ayr in April off 146 – and he’s rated 150 ahead of his reappearance this season….

One horse is not another of course….

…. but that one’s progress does tend to suggest that a fit and firing Twin Jets should be in the ballpark off a revised rating of 141….

You can’t go far wrong backing the Skelton brothers at the moment….

…. and Blue Carpet is a worthy favourite in the Coral “Pipped-At-The-Post” Payouts Handicap Hurdle….

My role is to find one that can get him beat….

…. and I’ve come down on the side of Emma Lavelle’s J J MOON at the general 5s….

I think her yard is on the rebound from a period of poor form….

…. just in time for a meeting that’s very important to her local yard….

…. and I like the step up to the 3m trip for a 6yo who won like a stayer in the making last time at Newton Abbot….

He looks every inch the type that can defy a 5lb rise from the handicapper….

…. he’s very much match-fit – whilst a lot of the opposition are returning to the track from long breaks – two haven’t been seen for 590 & 808 days….

…. and Harry Cobden partners again – Lavelle/Cobden are 14/58 @ 24.1% in combination since the start of 2024….

If there’s one thing I’m a little worried about, it’s the ground….

…. I wouldn’t want it to get too soft but – looking at the forecast – I think we’ll be okay….
