In ATC today….
…. I bring you my best picks on Day 3 at Aintree….
I’m on JAGWAR and JORDANS in the 4.00 – up at 10s & 33s….
…. I’m on LOOKAWAY at 7s in the 2.30….
…. and I’m on GET ON GEORGE at 16s in the 1.20….
That’s the summary….
…. you’ll find all my reasoning below – as per usual….
Oh…. and if you’re looking for the standout place terms on offer – you’ll find them in the Bet Box below….
Read on….
-----
…. the Grand National - Aintree – 4.00....
I’ve heard all the reasons why JAGWAR can’t win the Grand National….
…. him being just a 7yo…. his lack of physical maturity…. the mistakes he sometimes makes at his fences….
…. but I want to be with him at the 10s – regardless of all that….
He might be young – but he certainly doesn’t lack experience….
…. he’s had eight goes over fences since October 2024 – and it’s not like he’s been playing at it….
He won the Plate at the 2025 Cheltenham Festival….
…. he was third in this season’s December Gold Cup at the same track….
…. and second in the Betfair Exchange Handicap Chase – again at Cheltenham – in January….
That’s no bad showing from a horse bred to get further than those races are run over….
…. and he ran his best race yet last time at this year’s Festival when second in the Ultima on his first go at 3m+….
That race qualified him for Aintree…. he came from a fair way back…. he wasn’t stopping at the death…. and he gave the distinct impression he’ll stay further still….
It was Mark Walsh’s first go on him – a get-to-know-him ride in advance of this….
…. I bet he’d love to sign off from his tenure as the number one rider for JP McManus with a big win….
…. and – assuming he got the choice – he’s on this one over the other McManus runners in the field….
Jagwar doesn’t lack size – he’s already a big unit….
…. and – whilst he’ll likely be a bigger unit still next year – he’s on top of his game this year and you have to strike while the iron’s hot….
The long straights at Aintree might well suit this big lad (he’s 18-hands) better than all the ups and downs and twists and turns of Cheltenham – where he’s done a lot of his impressing to date….
…. and they’re putting on the cheekpieces for the first time – which might just help iron out some of the niggling mistakes he makes at his fences from time to time….
I like this horse, I think he’s got an awful lot going for him, he’s got uncharted upside at staying trips, and I want to be with him….
The other one I’m backing is JORDANS at the general 33s – who ticks the right boxes for me….
It’s always unwise to overlook one Joseph O’Brien has targeted at a race – and I know they’ve been working backwards from this race for a while….
He started the season over hurdles – only switching to fences after the turn of the year….
…. and whilst he didn’t set the track alight in either performance over the bigger obstacles this term….
…. he was pulled-up in the Thyestes on ground that wouldn’t have been his bag….
…. and he got outpaced the last time at Leopardstown over an inadequate trip….
His trainer says he’s come forward from that….
…. I’m very mindful of the fact that he produced an easy seasonal- – and career- – best effort when stepped up significantly in trip at this meeting last term….
…. I think he’ll appreciate the longer trip tomorrow….
…. he’ll certainly enjoy the spring ground….
…. and I see him as an off-the-radar runner who can step forward and produce a big run in what is his seasonal target….
He’s another 7yo – but I’m not bothered about that….
…. the race has changed and Noble Yeats showed it can be done by the right horse in 2022….
-----
…. the Freebooter - Aintree – 2.30....
I backed LOOKAWAY when he won the Ladbrokes Trophy at Kempton in February….
…. and I’m sticking with him for this at the 7s – because there’s more to come from Neil King’s 9yo…
He went up 6lb for the Kempton win….
…. but he’s still only rated 145 – and he’s pretty much completely unexposed in staying chases….
…. the Kempton run being his first beyond intermediate trips….
He likes to race prominently….
…. he’s a fantastic jumper….
…. and if he gets into a good rhythm tomorrow under regular partner Jack Quinlan, he could take some getting past….
…. with quite a few he’s up against looking patently out of form….
He won his bumper at this track…. it looks like he’ll get his ground…. and this will have been his target….
-----
…. the William Hill - Aintree – 1.20....
GET ON GEORGE at 16s is my idea of the pick of the prices for this….
He totally bombed out when stepped up to the 3m trip at Doncaster in a G2 novice event in January….
…. but he bounced back from that at Sandown last time – stepped back in trip for the EBF Final….
He stayed on really strong at the end of that race on soft ground….
…. and he’s well worth another go over further tomorrow….
There’s more to come off his mark of 132 – and I reckon he’s a fair punt at the price….

Now, just to recap….
The pick of the prices….To recap on my bets…. In the 4.00 @ Aintree….
