Get my picks for THIS afternoon….
In ATC today….
…. I bring you my best picks in the big handicaps on Day 4 at Goodwood….
I’m on HIGHWIND at 12s in the 1.50….
…. and in the 3.00 I’m on TRIBAL CHIEF at 8s & 7s and HAWKSBILL at 28s & 25s….
That’s the summary….
…. you’ll find all my reasoning below – as per usual….
Oh…. and if you’re looking for the standout place terms on offer – you’ll find them in the Bet Box below….
Read on….
-----
…. the Coral Goodwood – Goodwood – 1.50....
They’re using stalls to start this race for the first time tomorrow – and who knows where the right place to start is over a trip with so many twists and turns….
…. I certainly don’t – and I’m not going to try and work it out….
Instead, I’m going to keep it really simple and back the Willie-Mullins trained HIGHWIND at 12s….
For one, I think he’s going to prove a proper stayer at a trip he’s yet to appear over the on flat….
…. he was staying on at Down Royal over the extended 2m2f trip last September….
…. and I’m guessing that a proper test is going to see him to very best effect….
He’s had plenty of entries in big races at trips that he hasn’t taken up for one reason or another….
…. he was put in the British & Irish versions of the Cesarewitch last season….
…. he was slated for last season’s Martin Pipe at the Cheltenham Festival….
…. and he’s been connected with other high-profile races over 2m and further across the last couple of years….
His failure to take up any of these engagements means he’s still on a very unexposed mark of 85 – and I think that puts him in the reckoning tomorrow….
He was supposed to run in the amateur handicap just a few days ago at Galway – but was a reserve and didn’t get in….
I think he was fit, ready & firing for that – hence they’ve redirected him here….
…. and he’s an interesting runner at a nice price….
-----
…. the Golden Mile – Goodwood – 3.00....
Ahead of this meeting I outlined how successful trainer David Menuisier has been with his runners in decent Goodwood handicaps….
…. and TRIBAL CHIEF runs for him in this one tomorrow – up at 8s & 7s this morning….
The last couple of renewals have seen horses win from double-figure draws….
…. but – more often than not – you want to be drawn low for this….
…. and from stall 4 Tribal Chief’s got that box ticked….
He’s not without his risks, however – frequently getting away slowly from the stalls and doing himself no favours….
It happened last year in this very race – when he was fancied and sent off at 11/2….
…. and – while he made amends in a lesser race over course and distance next time out – we wouldn’t want a repeat performance tomorrow….
Jamie Spencer comes in the for the ride – and might just prove the perfect pilot for a horse that needs plenty to drop right….
On a mark of 93 the 6yo is only a pound below his career-high mark….
…. but I’d argue that he can go beyond that….
In that Goodwood race he won last year off 90 he beat Treble Tee, Linwood & Mister Winston – who have improved 11b, 15lb & 9lb respectively in the meantime….
I’m firing a second shot in this race and backing HAWKSBILL at 28s & 25s….
He ran at the track on Wednesday – finishing 5/20 and beaten 2l in the HKJC World Pool over 7f….
…. and – if they do run him again tomorrow (it’s not guaranteed) – I can only assume that connections think he’ll be sharper again for the run….
Phil Cunningham paid 175,000 guineas for this 4yo when he was rated 97….
…. and you don’t spend that kind of money on a gelding unless you think he’s a fair bit better than mark….
As it is he’s dropped 4lb to 93 after getting beaten in each of his four Meydan runs over the winter….
…. and he could be very nicely handicapped – especially going back over a mile which I think is his trip….
He’s just an interesting contender at a big price with a fair draw in stall 7….

Now, just to recap….
The pick of the prices….To recap on my bets…. In the 1.50 @ Goodwood….
e/w terms = It’s 5 places generally…. In the 3.00 @ Goodwood….
e/w terms = It’s 6 & 5 places generally…. Advised prices are correct at the point of publication – but subject to fluctuation. Shop around – you may find better quotes and terms than advised…. |
