The pick of the prices on Day 5 at Goodwood….

Get my picks for THIS afternoon….

In ATC today….

…. I bring you my best picks in the big handicaps on Day 5 at Goodwood….

I’m on FERROUS & FANDOM in the 3.35 at Goodwood – up at 20s & 20s….

…. I’m on SMALL FRY at 9s & 8s in the 1.50 at Goodwood….

…. and I’m on NAVAL LIGHT at 7s in the 4.10 at Goodwood….

That’s the summary….

…. the Stewards’ Cup – Goodwood – 3.35....

There’s a big pot up for grabs, plenty of horses turn up in form, and I reckon the market’s done a pretty good job of sorting the wheat from the chaff….

…. on my first keep-or-discard spin through the runners seven of the ten on my keep list were the top seven in this morning’s betting….

The high stall numbers have dominated the race over the last few years – no doubt….

…. but the track’s ridden pretty fair this week and half-a-dozen of my ten keeps are drawn in a clutch positioned more to the centre….

It’s very rare in these big fields that one horse stands out head and shoulders above the rest….

If one does then it’s usually an obvious Group horse that’s already been well-found by the markets….

It’s more often the case that several horses will present serious claims and it can be difficult to make a stronger case for one over another….

My ultimate consideration is price – and I will almost always opt for the horse/s up at the most generous odds….

In this case it’s Jack Channon’s FERROUS that gets the first vote at the general 20s….

He’s achieved more on the AW than on turf – but there’s no doubt in my mind that he handles turf….

…. bits and pieces of his form tell you as much and on 97 (he’s 2lb well in tomorrow) I think he’s very nicely handicapped for a shot at this….

He’s not been overused this term – having had a few goes on the AW in the first quarter of the year….

…. before having a break and coming back for two runs since the end of June….

In the second of those up at Hamilton earlier this month he demonstrated his well-being with a big run in the Scottish Stewards’ Cup – where he just got touched off by Red Strike….

I’d hazard a guess that this has been the target – and I reckon he can run a big race at a nice price….

I’m two-against the field for this and the other one I want to be with is FANDOM at the 20s….

He ran a fine trial last time at Ascot where he was 3/15 and beaten less than a length over the stiff 5f….

Tomorrow’s return to the 6f trip will suit….

…. and I’m mindful that the Hannon team actively targeted the Wokingham with him at Royal Ascot….

He had no chance that day drawn all the way over in stall 1….

…. but he gave it a proper bash – leading all the way and doing it all on his own  deep into the final furlong before – understandably – giving best….

He’s a pound lower tomorrow and this time – drawn in stall 22 – he’s not beaten before the race begins….

…. the Summer Handicap – Goodwood – 1.50....

I’m backing Joseph O’Brien’s SMALL FRY for this – at the general 9s & 8s….

He ran a cracker in the Ascot Stakes at the Royal meeting – finishing 6/20 and beaten just 3.5 lengths at the line….

This is a fair step back in trip – for sure….

…. but it was only last year that he ran three good races on the bounce over 12f for Gary & Josh Moore – looking every inch the progressive middle-distance handicapper….

I can’t imagine his trainer would send him all the way over here for a looksee or a blow….

…. and with the winner taking home £60k+ I’d wager he’s here for a serious go under Oisin Murphy who rode him at Ascot….

The jolly will take the beating but the O’Brien horse is interesting at the price….

…. the Phase Eight – Goodwood – 4.10....

Karl Burke’s NAVAL LIGHT turns out on a hat-trick having progressed again for a return to the 7f trip last time out at Catterick….

He won cosily enough that day and a 5lb rise to 88 doesn’t discount further improvement….

He ran well at this meeting last year in a maiden – finding only Stellar Sunrise too good….

He wasn’t beaten far that day and when you consider his conqueror’s currently racing off a mark of 100 – there’s plenty of potential margin to run into….

Karl Burke has targeted this race and the 7s is fair enough….
